Start with what has changed.
A sudden loss of hot water, a supply that runs out sooner and a leak at the unit need different investigations. Tell the plumber whether the problem affects every hot tap, when it started and whether household demand has changed. A cold shower after extra visitors isn't the same pattern as water staying cold after an unused night.
Visible water near the unit needs its source identified. A leaking connection, a relief discharge and a failed cylinder can look similar from a distance but have different implications. Don't order a replacement based only on a puddle beneath the system.

Understand the system you already have.
Storage systems heat and hold water in a cylinder. The available supply depends on stored capacity, heating input and recovery between uses. Electric storage can also depend on when power is available under the property's electricity arrangement.
Continuous flow systems heat water as it passes through. They don't use a storage tank in the same way, but their heating output and flow capacity still have limits. Simultaneous outlets, incoming water temperature and the installation affect performance.

Size for the busy period, not just the headcount.
The number of occupants is a starting point. The useful detail is when they use hot water. Consecutive morning showers, a bath and kitchen use can create a different peak from the same daily volume spread across the day. Tell the plumber about the busiest normal period.
For storage, capacity and recovery need to work together. A larger tank isn't the only consideration if heating availability is restricted or the system doesn't recover as expected. If the existing supply used to be adequate and suddenly isn't, diagnose that change before assuming the household needs a bigger unit.
For continuous flow, the output needs to suit the desired temperature and outlets operating together. The number on the front isn't a promise of the same performance in every condition. A supplier's sizing information and an assessment of the existing connections help narrow the options.
Repair or replace with a clear reason.
An isolated repair can be worthwhile when the main unit is sound, compatible parts are available and the system still suits the household. A leaking connection or replaceable component shouldn't be confused with failure of the entire storage cylinder.
Replacement becomes more compelling when the core unit has failed, repair parts aren't available, deterioration is extensive or the existing system no longer meets demand. Age provides context, but an arbitrary birthday doesn't establish the condition of your particular unit.
Compare the proposed repair with the fully installed replacement. Include any extra connection work, removal and changes needed at the property. If a unit may still be covered by product terms, check the model, serial number and purchase details before authorising major work.
Installation conditions can change the best choice.
A system has to fit more than the available floor or wall space. Access for removal, pipe routes, drainage, power and gas supply can influence the installation. Gas appliances also need appropriate siting and clearances. A new model isn't automatically suitable just because it fits where the old unit stood.
Moving a system can change the scope considerably. Longer pipe runs, different connection positions and access through a home can add work beyond replacing the unit. Share renovation plans before deciding so the installation supports the intended layout.
In strata, identify whether the unit serves your property alone or forms part of a shared supply. An external unit, common area or shared service can need coordination with the manager. For commercial premises, describe operating hours and essential hot water use.
Compare purchase cost with ongoing use.
A useful comparison considers installation cost, energy use, available tariffs, maintenance and the way the household uses hot water. The cheapest unit to purchase isn't automatically the least expensive arrangement over time. Equally, a more expensive system needs a clear benefit for the actual property.

If you're considering a change beyond the existing gas or electric installation, discuss the required work and service scope before purchasing. Rebate eligibility and savings need to be checked for the actual product and installation; they're not assumed here.
Bring an electricity or gas bill if you're comparing ongoing use. It can help identify the current supply arrangement. A plumber can assess the installation requirements, while your retailer confirms tariff availability and charges.
Know what the quote and handover include.
The quote should identify the proposed unit or repair, the plumbing work and any other trade work required. Removal of the existing system, additional valves, relocation and access arrangements should be clear. Ask how unforeseen connection work will be handled before installation begins.
At handover, keep the model and serial details, invoice, operating information and supplied compliance records together. Product warranties and workmanship terms may cover different parts of the job. Read the actual terms and any maintenance requirements for the installed model.

Identify the unit, connections, required trades, interruption and removal.
Receive the operating information

Avoid turning a fault into a safety problem.
Don't remove electrical covers, adjust gas components or keep resetting a unit that reports a recurring fault. Record the display code and follow the owner's information for your exact model. Unexpectedly hot water needs assessment; avoid the affected outlet until the cause is addressed.
If water is escaping near electrical equipment, keep clear and describe that when calling. If you smell gas inside the property, leave and call 000 from a safe place. Routine maintenance should follow the manufacturer's instructions rather than a generic procedure for a different hot water system.
