Before you book
What you need to know.
- Phone about active water escape before spending time finding the exact break.
- A repair should address the failed section and consider neighbouring pipework.
- Isolation, access and reinstatement affect the work and the interruption.
- Emergency attendance and a permanent repair can be different stages.

Describe what's happening now.
A burst supply pipe can release water continuously, while a split hose or failed fixture connection may flood a cupboard or room. The first useful information is where water is escaping, whether the flow continues and which areas are affected. You don't need to expose a concealed pipe before asking for help.
Scott & Sons offers 24/7 emergency plumbing on 02 9482 9199. Give the address, contact number and building access instructions. Explain if water is near electrical equipment, entering another unit or affecting a ceiling. Keep people away from those areas and call 000 if there's an immediate threat to safety.
The location changes the repair.
An exposed split can be assessed directly. A concealed break needs the source and route established before deciding where to gain access. Water can travel along building materials, so the wettest point isn't always directly beneath the fault.
Tell the plumber about recent drilling, landscaping, building work or earlier repairs nearby. That history helps explain the failure without assuming its cause. An isolated damaged connection and a deteriorated length of pipe can look similar once water has spread, but need different repair scopes.

| Location | Useful information | Work to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Exposed connection | Where it leaks and which fixtures it serves | Local repair and surrounding fittings |
| Inside a wall or floor | Water pattern and known pipe route | Investigation, access and reinstatement |
| Under paving or garden | Recent excavation and service records | Safe location, access and surface repairs |
| Shared building supply | Affected units and existing valves | Authorisation, notices and restoration |
Compare local repair with section replacement.
A sound pipe with a damaged fitting may need a limited repair. Where corrosion, repeated failures or damage extends along a run, replacing a larger identified section may be more sensible than treating only the latest leak. The recommendation should explain what was observed, rather than rely on age alone.
Ask which section is being repaired, what connection changes are needed and how new work meets the existing installation. If a temporary measure contains the immediate problem, distinguish it from the permanent repair. Keep any follow-up work on the same record so a short-term response isn't mistaken for completion.
Plan isolation and restoration of the water.
The plumber needs to control the supply before opening pipework. That may affect a fixture, part of a property or a shared line. In a building, the person arranging access should identify who can authorise a shutdown and notify those who rely on it.
Mention water-dependent equipment and essential facilities. Pipe freezing is a listed Scott & Sons service that can be considered for suitable planned work, but it isn't a substitute for emergency assessment or a promise that every repair avoids a shutdown. Confirm the intended interruption and the fallback arrangement before work proceeds.
What goes into the quote.
The replacement pipe is only part of the cost. Attendance timing, fault location, excavation or surface opening, working space and affected connections influence the job. Shared access or a return with specific materials can also alter the sequence.
Ask for a description of the immediate work, permanent repair and separate reinstatement. Plumbing repair doesn't automatically include drying a room, replacing cabinetry, plastering or decorating. If a manager or insurer needs documentation, request a factual account of the fault and work. Insurance coverage decisions belong with the insurer; a plumbing diagnosis doesn't settle those terms.
What happens after the pipe is repaired.
Ask how the repaired section was checked and whether concerns remain. A restored supply confirms an important step, but wet building materials and damaged finishes may need separate attention. Keep access available for agreed follow-up rather than concealing the area immediately.
Record the location and date. If another leak has occurred on the same run, include that history in a discussion about planned replacement. Scott & Sons provides ongoing water installation and maintenance, so an urgent repair can be followed by a scoped plan where the findings justify it.
Make the urgent call
Describe the active flow, affected areas and safe access.
Control and assess
The plumber establishes isolation and the extent of damaged pipework.
Approve the repair
Confirm permanent work, interruptions and any separate surface repair.
Restore and record
Check the completed plumbing and retain findings for future maintenance.
