Compare freezing with conventional isolation.
A functioning local valve can make conventional shutdown the straightforward choice. Where a whole building would otherwise be affected, the comparison becomes more involved. Consider occupants, water-dependent equipment, notice requirements and the practical work involved in draining and refilling the relevant system.
Pipe freezing brings its own preparation and monitoring. The right choice considers the complete job, including pipe condition and what happens if repair takes longer than expected. It shouldn't be treated as uninterrupted water for every occupant or a guarantee that no shutdown will be needed. Ask which option best fits the actual repair rather than choosing solely on disruption claims.
Plan the component replacement at the same time.
Repair parts, access and authorisation need to be ready before temporary isolation is attempted. For valve replacement, identify the proposed valve and its connection requirements. For a pipe alteration, understand the route and reconnection point. A missing fitting or unclear approval can interrupt work at the wrong moment.
The brief should cover checking the repair and returning the system to service. Adding a usable isolation point may improve future maintenance where the design allows. Ask whether that's included; the temporary method doesn't provide permanent isolation after the job.
