Where does the water escape?
Water spilling over a gutter edge, dripping through a joint and backing up at the foot of a downpipe are different clues. Note whether the problem affects a short section or several sides of the building. A gutter can look sound from below while its outlet or the connected drain is restricted.

Assess the gutter as part of the roofline.
The gutter's condition, alignment, supports and outlets all influence how it carries water. Repeatedly treating the same joint can miss movement or deterioration in the surrounding section. A proper repair decision considers what is holding the gutter in position as well as where water is escaping.
If the fascia or supporting building material is damaged, that may need work beyond the gutter itself. Confirm who assesses and repairs it before new guttering is attached. The quote should describe the plumbing scope and any dependency on a carpenter, roofer or other building work, rather than assuming new metalwork resolves the entire roof edge.
Clear, repair or replace?
Clearing debris makes sense where the system is serviceable and the obstruction explains the overflow. A local joint or outlet repair can suit a limited fault. Widespread deterioration, damaged sections or a layout that doesn't drain properly may make replacement the more useful option.
Compare the intended outcome of each proposal. A small repair can restore a specific connection without renewing surrounding aged material. Replacement can address a longer run, but needs appropriate connections and drainage capacity. Ask which problem each option solves and whether any unresolved downstream issue would still cause overflow after the work.
Match new components to the existing system.
Profile, material, colour, outlet arrangement and downpipe position matter when replacing guttering. Matching appearance is only part of the decision: new sections must connect appropriately and work with the roof and drainage they're serving. Material compatibility should be checked rather than mixing components based only on availability.
A downpipe relocation changes more than the visible roofline. Its route and connection below need to be suitable, with any effect on paving, walls or access understood. If the existing discharge point is unclear, establish it before approving a replacement that assumes the old connection is adequate.
Understand the cost drivers.
Length, profile and material influence replacement cost, while height and working access can affect the labour and equipment required. A single-storey accessible section is a different job from a gutter above a narrow side passage, neighbouring roof or shared access area. The number of outlets and connection changes also matters.
Confirm whether removal, disposal, access equipment, downpipe connections and making good are included. If only part of the roofline is being replaced, identify the start and finish points. That makes quotes easier to compare and prevents an assumption that every gutter or downpipe has been renewed when only the damaged section was included.
Plan maintenance around the actual property.
Trees, roof shape and how debris reaches outlets can influence maintenance needs. A property with recurrent leaf build-up needs a different plan from a clear roofline with corroded joints. Keep a record of recurring overflow locations so maintenance checks can focus on the areas that have caused trouble.
Don't climb ladders or walk on the roof to prepare for attendance. Provide ground-level photographs, safe access details and the building contact. Ask for findings that distinguish removed debris from remaining defects, then record any recommended repair. Leaf guards may be an option to discuss, but they don't remove the need for appropriate inspection and maintenance.
